Jofra Archer has quickly become one of the most exciting young cricketers in English cricket. Born in Barbados to an English father and a West Indian mother. There was much speculation in the run-up to the tournament about his inclusion in the England World Cup squad in 2019. Changes to the ECB’s qualification rules meant that after three years, instead of the expected seven years, he was granted a residence permit and quickly given the opportunity internationally.
Archer had announced his intention to play for England using his British passport shortly after moving to England. He impressed both with Sussex and in T20 leagues around the world and made his ODI debut against Ireland. It only took a couple of performances, 2 of 29 in a T20I against Pakistan, followed by 1 of 6 of four precision pace overs in an abandoned ODI to convince England of their worth at the World Cup. Archer’s talent was evident when he followed fellow Chris Jordan into the English line-up.
It was Jordan who brought Sussex’s attention to Archer’s talents after confronting him at a web meeting in Barbados, and his assessment that “the sky’s the limit” was borne out by the promise of slaps and bowling spells. Archer, a silky fast-acting bowler who can reach speeds of over 90 mph and a dangerous low-to-mid-level hitter, played for the West Indies U19 in 2013 but moved away from Barbados after a serious injury in the back.
Instead, he bounced back while playing for Sussex’s second XI and for Hobart Hurricanes in the Sussex Premier League. He had played without a contract with a long-term back injury, but Sussex acted quickly to keep him safe longer. He left a strong impression when he stormed the Sussex championship squad in the second half of 2016, debuting in all three formats and taking a total of 35 wickets.
He did not waste his talent and floated back into the fold with good results in 2017, with 61 wickets at 25 and averaging over 45 with the bat, a brilliant aspect of Sussex’s ad campaign. He went to the Big Bash League for the first time that winter and then showed his star potential in the IPL after being bought by the Rajasthan Royals for £ 800,000.

Archer joined England’s 30-man team to train behind closed doors for the 2020 Test series against the West Indies and was part of the English team for the first friendly series.
However, on the morning of the second test, Archer was sent off the England team for the game after violating biosecurity protocols and he was then isolated for five days, fined, and warned in writing by the ECB.
