All About Washington Sundar And His Cricket Career

Washington Sundar (born October 5, 1999) is an Indian cricketer representing his country internationally. He bats left-handed and bowls right-arm off-spin. He was a member of the Indian national under-19 cricket team as an all-rounder.On December 13, 2017, he made his international debut for India against Sri Lanka. He made his IPL debut in 2017 with the Rising Pune Supergiant. He has been with Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2022.

Sundar is a disciplined bowler who has held his own in domestic one-day events and the IPL after making his Twenty20 debut as a 17-year-old. Sundar’s father, a cricketer who made the Tamil Nadu Ranji problems but did not make the final team, gave him the name Washington in honour of his godfather, Mr Washington, who would buy bats and pay his costs. Sundar enjoyed bowling, but only in matches since he found fielding tedious. Under the watchful guidance of former India offspinner M Venkataramana, he ultimately began to take it seriously.

Sundar, whose father gave the name PD Washington as a token of gratitude to his mentor, has ascended through the ranks, from the age-group level to the Under-19 level, and from Tamil Nadu to the Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). He was one of the 18-year-old cricketers expected to be part of India’s future generation of players. Sundar, a left-handed top-order batsman who also bowls off-spin, made his first-class debut in a low-key manner, following an outstanding performance for India in the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. In the end, India came in second place, losing the title match against West Indies.

Sundar was originally only selected as a net bowler for India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia; however, numerous injuries to fellow bowlers, as well as India’s inability to fly in replacements at short notice due to quarantine restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, saw him earn an unexpected first Test cap on January 15, in the series’ final Test match at The Gabba. His first Match wicket was Steve Smith, and he hit 62 in his debut Test innings as part of a critical seventh-wicket stand of 123 with Shardul Thakur, which stopped India from facing a sizeable first-innings deficit and helped India win the test.

IPL Career of Washington Sundar

When Washington Sundar debuted in the Indian Premier League in 2017, he had all of the traits that an Indian cricketer should possess. Sundar is a three-dimensional player who can bat anywhere in order, provide meaningful overs in the powerplay, and contribute in the field. He joined the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (2017) as a substitute for the injured Ravi Ashwin after going unsold in 2017. He was the talk of the town at the end of the competition, having taken eight wickets in 11 matches. More than the wickets, the capacity to contain drew the onlooker’s attention.

Sundar went for a record 3.2 crore rupees in the 2018 players’ bid after going unsold in the 2017 auctions. Was it the pricing pressure that affected the child, or was it a lack of opportunities? When Sundar was denied a consistent run in the starting XI, the effect of changing and chopping in Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers had a telling effect, with Sundar’s bowling taking a battering.
